Here's an excellent podcast (https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/009-the-low-cost-modern-house/) about the factors affecting the cost of your new home. The podcaster is talking about a Modern house, but the same principles apply to any style.
One warning about the square foot cost numbers he mentions: The host is based in Texas - a much less expensive market than Minnesota. Add about $80 per square foot to the costs he mentions if you're building in Minnesota.
